Launched in 2013 to address the disproportionate underrepresentation of black men from less privileged backgrounds in large commercial law firms and more recently the City of London, the Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship Scheme is aimed at exceptionally-talented first-year students studying Law and, at some universities, other courses too.

Combining the efforts of a global law firm, universities, an investment bank, a regulator, and an insurer, this unique Scheme has provided over 300 candidates with paid-for insight day and assessment centre experiences. Benefits for 55 Scholars include a tailored 15-month development/mentoring programme.
Over two thirds of recruitment-stage Scholars have commercial law/investment banking roles, or are in post-graduate studies.
